Review:
Talk about an appropriate title. It is a collection of 11 short stories Director indie stalwart Jim Jarmusch (Strangers in Paradise, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai), which was taken over last 18 years , all of which include two or more characters sit at a table to talk about ... Yes, coffee and cigarettes. In the hands of lesser director could be very boring, but Jarmusch is a master subtle understatement and a great deadpan humor. This may be one of the funniest movies you've ever seen where no one cracks a smile. Almost all the actors play, which is meta-theatrical, slightly surreal touch to it all. Among my favorite stories is one that overly enthusiastic Alfred Molina has a surprise in store for cool arrogant fellow actor Steve Coogan, and a large one that Cate Blanchett plays both himself and her jealous cousin Shelby. Then there's the one where Tom Waits and Iggy Pop in a dive bar meet to discuss things and smoke (quit smoking four), and Jack Meg White of White Stripes experimenting with Tesla coil, and the funniest cast, RZA and GZA of Wu-Tang Clan part somewhere, of all people, Bill Murray. I also like the one with Spike Read Twin brothers and sisters, Joie and Cinque, dealing with intrusive waiter (funny Steve Buscemi). Almost all of the stories are excellent, but there are three that are very beautiful and forget unnecessary, and they are all in order, which disrupt the flow of the film. If these three took coffee and cigarettes would be just about perfect, but it's still very good. And three of the way in the first half, anyway. For the first hour of the film feels mostly like fun. Straight-faced, deadpan, B & W comedy like strangers in paradise. But if it goes on, and the strange relationship between stories, revealing dream suddenly have depth. The final story in particular where two old men in a dark room (Bill Rice and Taylor Mead) about life during the coffee feels like itll always, feel clear waiting for Godot and end of the film the perfect knowledge of anyone, existential sadness. It was at that point that I realized I hadnt just orginally Jokey string of short stories, but Jokey string of short stories that say a lot about human nature and life in general. And if that is not enough to interest you, how often you get to see Tom Waits and Iggy Pop talks? Or RZA, GZA, and Bill Murray?
